Varieties of Snuff Listings

Snuff is available in scented and unscented forms, and is currently produced in North America, South America, Europe and Asia. The three main nasal snuff importers into the U.S. are Pöschl Tabac from Germany, and Wilsons of Sharrow and Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. in England.
Pöschl’s snuff is typically courser, moistened by secret oils and then mentholated. The English snuffs are finer grained and drier, using only water and natural essences in their blends, with flavors ranging from unscented to floral, fruit and mentholated.
There are three distinct varities of snuff size, which are known by their French names—gros, demi gros and fin.
Fin is typically the driest snuff available. It reveals more of the subtle aromas of snuff because it can cover more of the nasal passageways and allow faster transfer of the powder’s scent and taste into the nose membranes.
Because of their finely ground texture, fin snuffs are often the ones that induce sneezing because it’s easy to oversnuff—taking the snuff with too much effort, leaving it in the back of the throat and upper sinuses.
Fin snuffs are pale in color. The more popular brands are High Toast, Irish, High Dried and Scotch.
Demi gros is the medium flour snuff and makes up the majority of the snuff on the market today. Demi gros is easier to take than fin and balances the snuff’s grain size and scent in a way that works well with both beginners and experienced snuff takers.
Demi gros snuffs appear golden brown in color. The most popular demi gros snuffs are the unscented S.P. blends. However the scented varieties have also grown in popularity.
Gros has lost popularity throughout the years. Historically, most gros snuffs were made from darker tobaccos and left unscented but today most of the gros snuffs are scented.
Gros snuffs include pieces of tobacco stalk, which holds flavor but also tends to dry out prematurely. Some of the more popular gros varieties include Kendal Brown, Brown Rappee, Black Rappee and Princes.
