What Is Snuff

Snuff and HealthHits: 58

Snuff has been found to be beneficial in some cases of hay fever due to the fact that the snuff may prevent allergens from getting to the mucus membrane within the nose. It’s also useful to open the nasal cavities when suffering from the common cold.

In fact, tobacconists and pharmacies have historically seen a rise in their medicated snuff sales each year when the cold and flu season hits.

Medicated snuffs, flavored by using metholated crystals, eucalyptus oils or camphor, once dominated folks’ medicine chests because they were recognized as being a great cure for a stuffy head.

The famous Hedges L260 snuff was actually invented by a doctor in Birmingham, England, who created the blend as a prescription for the treatment of colds, hay fever and other similar maladies.

McChrystal’s of Leicester, England, continues to make extremely popular medicated nasal snuffs, such as McChrystal’s Mint Snuff, McChrystal’s Original and English Menthol.

McChrystal’s snuffs are made using closely guarded recipe secrets that have been handed down through the same family for 80 years.

Wilson’s of Sharrow’s Menthol Plus is another popular medicated snuff that features menthol and camphor mixed with a blend of Zimbabwean and Burley tobaccos.

Because snuff is growing in popularity, thanks to public smoking bans, many are questioning if it is harmful to health. Like any tobacco product, snuff usage presents risks, but in nearly 300 years of snuff production, Wilson’s & Co. has yet to have a health complaint filed against them.

According to Dr. Brad Rodu, a leading pathologist studying cancer and tobacco at the University of Alabama-Birmingham, the burning tobacco and inhaling the smoke create most carcinogens.

And a study published in the English medical journal, The Lancet, in March 1980, concluded that “Snuff may well be a satisfactory and acceptable substitution for cigarette smoking…Switching from cigarettes to snuff could have enormous health benefits.”

Many specialists agree, arguing that, for health reasons, if you are going to use tobacco, then you are better off using smokeless tobacco, like nasal snuff.
